Danger for water

Fertilisers and pesticides, microplastics or other residues: our actions carry pollutants into the water and pollute it heavily in other ways as well.
Currently, there are about 2,500 pharmaceuticals that enter the water cycle via the toilet – either through excreta or because they are disposed of incorrectly. Sewage treatment plants do not help here; the substances remain in the water. They have even been found in drinking water.

Industry, on the other hand, does not only discharge substances. Power plants also use water for cooling, which at the same time warms up the rivers and changes their living organisms: Alien species such as the bullfrog or common sunfish are settling, and native species are being displaced.

Gevaren voor het water

Meststoffen en pesticiden, microplastics of andere resten: onze handelingen brengen verontreinigende stoffen in het water en vervuilen het ook op andere manieren sterk.

Momenteel zijn er ongeveer 2.500 farmaceutische stoffen die via het toilet in de waterkringloop terechtkomen – hetzij door uitscheiding, hetzij doordat ze verkeerd worden weggegooid. Zuiveringsinstallaties helpen hier niet; de stoffen blijven in het water. Ze zijn zelfs aangetroffen in drinkwater. De industrie loost daarentegen niet alleen stoffen. Ook energiecentrales gebruiken water voor koeling, waardoor de rivieren opwarmen en de levende organismen veranderen: Uitheemse soorten zoals de brulkikker of de zonnebaars vestigen zich, en inheemse soorten worden verdrongen.
