The new gold

The most important resource in the world? That’s water. And second place? Sand! In fact, sand is in just about everything today: in road surfaces, concrete houses, glass, toothpaste or microchips. We have used it so intensively that the commodity that was once abundant is now scarce.
So why not just get supplies from the desert? Because sand from there is too smooth and round for building. Clay and silt also fail. Both store a lot of water and swell up, which is fatal for building. Only sand is perfect: it binds less water, and walls and ceilings remain stable. But there are already ideas to replace sand – from recycled concrete to artificial building materials to straw.

De belangrijkste grondstof ter wereld? Dat is water. En de tweede plaats? Zand! In feite zit zand tegenwoordig overal in: in wegdek, betonnen huizen, glas, tandpasta of microchips. We hebben het zo intensief gebruikt dat het goed dat ooit overvloedig was, nu schaars is.
Waarom halen we dan niet gewoon voorraden uit de woestijn? Omdat zand van daar te glad en rond is om mee te bouwen. Klei en slib falen ook. Beide slaan veel water op en zwellen op, wat fataal is voor de bouw. Alleen zand is perfect: het bindt minder water, en muren en plafonds blijven stabiel. Er zijn echter al ideeën om zand te vervangen – van gerecycleerd beton
van gerecycleerd beton tot kunstmatige bouwmaterialen en stro.
