Stories from the underground

Books tell stories of what once happened. Just like soils: we can read about the past in them not from left to right, but from top to bottom.
The soils today are the result of a post-glacial development that began thousands of years ago. They tell us about the climate and
how our ancestors lived. Was the landscape overgrown or barren? Was it wet or dry? And what was the culture of the people like in which place?
The soil not only holds archaeological and fossil finds.
We today also leave behind things that the soil preserves. Pollutants, rubbish and objects – these are the testimonies that tell posterity what it was like in our time.

Verhalen uit de grond

Boeken vertellen verhalen over wat er ooit gebeurd is. Net als vloeren:
We lezen daarin het verleden niet van links naar rechts, maar van boven naar beneden.
De huidige bodem is het resultaat van een post-glaciale ontwikkeling die duizenden jaren geleden begon. Ze vertellen ons over het klimaat en
hoe onze voorouders leefden. Was het landschap overwoekerd of kaal? Was het nat of droog? En hoe was de cultuur van de mensen in welke plaats?
De bodem bevat niet alleen archeologische en fossiele vondsten.
Wij laten vandaag ook dingen achter die de bodem bewaart. Verontreinigingen, afval en voorwerpen – dat zijn de getuigenissen die het nageslacht vertellen hoe het was in onze tijd.
