Once Into space, please!

We could all book a trip into space today. But that is extremely expensive. But demand will increase. Such flights will therefore become more frequent and cheaper. If the rockets continue to be technically reliable and if the strain can be kept bearable for people who are not specially trained, there will hardly be anything standing in the way of mass tourism into space.

But how much of a burden is it on the environment if many people want to travel into space? It’s not just about the fuel or the resources for building the rockets. It’s also about waste. Because parts of spacecrafts often remain in Earth orbit. They fly through space as so-called space debris.

We zouden vandaag allemaal een ruimtereis kunnen boeken. Maar dat is extreem duur. Maar de vraag zal toenemen. Dergelijke vluchten zullen dus frequenter en goedkoper worden. Als de raketten technisch betrouwbaar blijven en als de belasting draaglijk kan worden gehouden voor mensen die niet speciaal zijn opgeleid, zal er nauwelijks iets in de weg staan aan massatoerisme naar de ruimte.

Maar hoe belastend is het voor het milieu als veel mensen de ruimte in willen? Het gaat niet alleen om de brandstof of de middelen om de raketten te bouwen. Het gaat ook om afval. Want onderdelen van ruimtevaartuigen blijven vaak in een baan om de aarde. Ze vliegen door de ruimte als zogenaamde ruimteafval.
