Small bodies

Small bodies – these are all objects smaller than dwarf planets. Their gravity is not sufficient for a spherical shape. This class includes asteroids, comets and the smaller meteoroids.

Asteroids date back to the early days of the solar system. They never became part of a larger body permanently. However, they can grow or break up into fragments through collisions.

Comets are similar to asteroids, except they are less compact. They are made of rock and ice. Some of the ice turns into gas near the sun. This is how comets develop their typical tails of gas and dust.

Kleine hemellichamen

Kleine lichamen – dit zijn alle objecten die kleiner zijn dan dwergplaneten. Hun zwaartekracht is niet voldoende voor een bolvorm. Hiertoe behoren asteroïden, kometen en de kleinere meteoroïden.

Asteroïden dateren uit de begintijd van het zonnestelsel. Ze zijn nooit een vast onderdeel van een groter lichaam geworden. Wel kunnen ze door botsingen groeien of in fragmenten uiteenvallen.

Kometen lijken op asteroïden, maar zijn minder compact. Ze bestaan uit rots en ijs. Een deel van het ijs verandert in de buurt van de zon in gas. Zo ontwikkelen kometen hun typische staart van gas en stof.
