We heat up

There is no doubt about it: we humans influence the climate. The exhaust fumes from our civilisation are heating up the atmosphere, the oceans and the land surfaces. It is getting warmer everywhere. The speed at which things are changing in the climate system is unprecedented in the history of the Earth. The level of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than it has been in the last two million years.

Particularly due to the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, the level has risen from about 280 parts per million (ppm for short) at the beginning of industrialisation to more than 416 ppm in 2020.

We stoken de boel op

Zonder twijfel: wij mensen beïnvloeden het klimaat. De uitlaatgassen van onze beschaving warmen de atmosfeer, de oceanen en de landoppervlakken op. Het wordt overal warmer. De snelheid waarmee het klimaatsysteem verandert, is ongekend in de geschiedenis van de aarde. Het niveau van het broeikasgas koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer is hoger dan het in de afgelopen twee miljoen jaar is geweest.

Met name door de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen zoals kolen, olie en aardgas is het niveau gestegen van ongeveer 280 delen per miljoen aan het begin van de industrialisatie tot meer dan 416 in 2020. De eenheid delen per miljoen wordt ook wel parts per million genoemd, of kortweg ppm.
